360 HORSEMANSHIP

LESSONS, HORSE TRAINING, COLT STARTING

360 Horsemanship empowers riders with confidence and skill that opens doors to lifelong adventure in the great outdoors and the arena. I’m Josh Staggs, I take the guesswork out of what to do next through customized lesson plans for horsemen of all levels using a building block approach.

So many factors can impact success, but with these challenges also come opportunities. I focus on building trust, respect, and communication between you and your horse by breaking down exercises into easy-to-understand steps. This provides rewarding moments that will build mutual trust and help your horse develop confidence in you as their leader.

JOSH STAGGS

HORSEMANSHIP COACH, TRAINER, COMPETITOR

MY BACKGROUND
I’m Josh Staggs, horsemanship coach, trainer, and competitor. My experience with horses started before I could walk. I grew up on a 400-acre working ranch, just south of San Antonio, Texas. In fact, I operate 360 Horsemanship on that same ranch.

Growing up, I could never get enough of horses. My dad taught me at a very early age to ride. I was homeschooled for almost four years and during this time I worked for Jean Poole. Jean owned Poole’s Quarter Horse Ranch and Stables. She taught me the basics of starting colts from the ground up. After my military service and working abroad, I returned home to the ranch and began building 360 Horsemanship.

Along the way, I met my second mentor Gary Mitcham. Gary has taken the time to help me understand the finer points of how to “finish” a cow horse. As a cutting horse trainer for most of his adult life, all Gary asked me for was effort and that’s what I provided in abundance. With his instruction, he has helped me to round out the rough edges of my training program. I continue to learn from Gary and work with him on multiple horses, promotions, and cattle deals.

MY TRAINING
Jean taught me groundwork, how to ride with my body first and use my hand to communicate with my horse, rather than control my horse. Jean rode in several different disciplines from Western Pleasure, and Western Trail to barrels, reining, and cow horse events. Gary has been a huge influence on my approach to training cow horses and the techniques involved in controlling a cow from the saddle. When I’m not coaching my own students, I help Gary finish his champion cow horses and coach/support our students and customers.

MY AWARDS & AFFILIATIONS
I’m also the Vice President of South Central Texas Ranch Sorting (SCTRS). SCTRS is an affiliate for Cinch RSNC (Ranch Sorting National Championships). The group was started in 2018 and has grown progressively larger over the years. Our show arena is located in Poteet, TX, and we typically have about 8-10 sanctioned CINCH RSNC shows each year with a number of other privately hosted shows.

While I’ve been fortunate to have success in showing horses in different western disciplines over the years, my recent efforts are focused on Ranch Sorting and other cow events. Using the techniques I’ve learned from Gary and Jean, I was able to earn the 2020 Texas State Championship #3 and the 2021 Western Heritage #3 High Point World Championship.
